I have dreamt of going to the University of North Carolina, and my mom and I had a plan of visiting this september, but a recent trip to Central Florida, made me realize I woudln’t mind staying in the state of Florida. The more I’ve been thinking though, makes me realize, I shouldn’t give up on this dream, and I still plan on applying to North Carolina, but now my mom won’t let me go and visit the college, which is okay, and I respect that decision. Since I can’t visit, I am asking what other things should I look at, that may help me make my decision, since I can’t see the atmosphere the university is in.

I am a rising senior from Georgia I am looking for a competitive university with outstanding academics, but I want to major in Music Education. I currently have a 4.0 GPA. My school does not have any honors or AP classes, but I have taken 4 college courses and will take 8 my senior year . The problem I’m having is finding a place where my credits will transfer and a place with excellent financial aid.

I’m currently considering:

1. Northwestern University

2. Vanderbilt University

3. Duke University

4. Emory University

5. University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill

6. University of North Carolina—Greensboro

The first five have outstanding academics, but Duke, Emory, and Chapel Hill don’t have great (and I want GREAT) music programs (especially for sax). Northwestern has the perfect balance, but I don’t think my college credits will transfer. UNC Greensboro has a great music program, but I’m not sure about its academics. It does, however, have Lloyd International Honors College.
I’m retaking the SAT this summer, but I made a 1910 in 10th grade.
Well, I learned recently that I can’t transfer my college courses to any of the first four places (or to almost any private college). Apparently, they don’t like to transfer them if you used them as high school graduation requirements as well.
