TAR HEEL, N.C. (AP) - Federal officials arrested 28 people suspected of identity theft during raids at a Smithfield Foods’ slaughterhouse in Tar Heel and in neighborhoods in four surrounding counties.

Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency spokesman Richard Rocha says agents made the arrests in Bladen, Cumberland, Hoke and Robeson counties.

Smithfield spokesman Dennis Pittman says company officials learned about the raid not long before agents arrived at about 4 a.m. to remove some workers from the world’s largest hog processing plant.

Rocha says 25 arrestees are Mexican, two Guatemalan and one Honduran. Thirteen were women and 15 were men.
